:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from P. Blevins -- Intriguing, personal, and compelling : What They Didn’t Burn: Uncovering My Father’s Holocaust Secrets is by Mel Laytner. This book takes the reader into the story of Josef “Dolek” Lajtner’s journey of “survival and escape from Hitler-and-the-Nazis” (Laytner, Kindle Location 80) during World War II. Mel’s years as a journalist gave him the investigative skills to delve into the archives of various museums to locate primary sources with which to validate and prove his father’s stories were authentic. His emotional connection to the stories and the documents he found, makes the reader feel those connections too. This book is more than an account of Joseff’s life under Hitler; but a detective story, a story of change, discovery, and a project of love. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robinsonauthor -- emotional and gripping : Mel Laytner’s What They Didn’t Burn offers the reader both an emotional account of a son retracing his father’s traumatic experiences under Nazi persecution, and a gripping detective story of a savvy journalist uncovering “what they didn’t burn.” This beautifully written and deeply felt book, a powerful tribute to his father’s fortitude, also serves as a reminder that the long shadow of the Nazi past stretches over generations. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from RJS -- Great Read!! : As others have mentioned, this is a very good read. Easy to follow and well paced, it details the authors quest for his Fathers past, with lots of details on his research. One very important detail I was very impressed with , were his details on a particular document. In Chapter 14 -Diversion by Document - the "SS Profitability Calculation", details the authors efforts to verify and locate the actual source for it. He humbly calls this a "cautionary lesson in Reporting 101". It should be required reading in any history class. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Larry Hering -- Amazing research paired with a heartfelt eulogy : Rarely does a history keep me turning pages; this one did. The author blended meticulous research, great writing and a clearly heartfelt eulogy to his father into a concise book that left me, despite the obvious finality of the ending, wanting more. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from sedcarroll -- Engaging Story : Author Mel Laytner may be a journalist by trade, but he has great talent as a story teller. The book is an interesting mix of investigative journalism and narrative. It’s a quick read that I found difficult to put down, even though you know the ending of the story at the beginning of the book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from KRomano -- Touching and Powerful : As in the best of detective stories you find yourself both routing for, and fearing for the detective as he uncovers his father’s journey of survival during WWII. Drawing on a long and distinguished career in journalism, Mr Laytner takes us on a journey that is both extremely personal, and at times harrowing, as he uses his formidable investigative skills to uncover his father’s past and comes to really understand the complicated man that he was. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from mcbnorris -- A powerful, moving and memorable story : What They Didn't Burn is a superb account of a stellar reporter's quest to learn about the Holocaust life of the father who talked little about it. Always a devastating subject, the Holocaust here becomes the occasion for a very human story of survival, survivors and a son who needed to know what and how his father endured.
